Almost Seaworthy At Last

Posted August 5, 2011

Well, it"s been a while but all that needs to be done is the wiring in the dash an a few odds and ends and we'll be putting her in the water. The  electrical is hopefully being done this weekend.

I made new cushions for the cuddy last fall. After we replaced the wooden frame with pressure treated lumber, patched the hole in the bench seat with fibreglass, we then put a fresh layer of fibre glass over the whole underside of the seat, it should last for quite a few years now. I reupholstered the pilot's seat with navy blue marine grade vinyl and used the same for the bench seat. I bought an electric staple gun to make the job a lot easier. I made some pockets on both sides in the upholstered bench seat to hold small items that might get blown about while on the water.

We bought a rebuilt engine for the boat, a 350 Chevy, and hubby helped our friend put it in the boat. We also bought another engine for parts that weren't included in the rebuilt engine and they also did some minor repairs and replacements on the outboard as well. We started it up and it runs great,  I think the boat will probably last us for the rest of our lives now.

So all tolled, we spent $800 for the boat and trailer, $1950 for the rebuilt motor, $600 for the parts motor, $100 for ropes and cleats,  $300 for re-upholstery, $150 for the fibre-glass and bondo for the seats, $120 for the life jackets, 4 adults and 2 youths, and $1000 for labour. We still have to get insurance for it and boating licenses and we'll be all set. Oh yeah, we have to buy a chemical toilet and a fish-finder yet. We'll be out fishing yet this summer!
